Lancashire’s lead provider of domestic abuse services is bringing festive cheer to survivors and their families with its much-loved Mrs. Claus tradition.
What began five years ago with a donated pair of red boots has grown into a county-wide celebration. A survivor once said to Safenet employee Pat, “You could wear them as Mrs. Claus,” sparking a tradition that has become a lifeline of joy during the holidays.
Starting 3 December, Mrs. Claus and her elf will visit every Safenet refuge across Lancashire, hosting grotto experiences, joining celebrations, and sprinkling festive magic for families rebuilding their lives after abuse.
Highlights of this year’s programme include gifts for every child, packets of reindeer food to scatter on Christmas Eve and Christmas bells to take home and hang on their own trees.
Last year’s grotto, created in a garden shed and opened to children from Safenet Burnley Services, was described as “uplifting and magical” by families who attended. This year’s expansion ensures that every survivor and child supported by Safenet can share in the joy.
Pat, the star behind Mrs. Claus, said: “Initially I decided to do Mrs. Claus to bring a smile to everyone’s face on Christmas Day, myself as Mrs. Claus and my sister Ellen, who also works at Safenet, as an elf. I have done Mrs. Claus for the last five years and enjoyed every one of them.

“It’s so magical to see the excitement and smiles on the faces of children and their mothers. This year is even bigger, sprinkling Christmas magic and helping make happy memories for survivors of domestic abuse.”
Safenet’s Area Operational Lead, Izzy, added: “For some children this will be their first Christmas away from home, safe in refuge.
“When we hear children worry that Father Christmas won’t know where to bring their presents, our teams which includes Mrs. Claus, and her elves keep the Christmas magic alive at Safenet and that makes me so proud.”
Part of the Calico Group, Safenet has supported survivors of domestic abuse for nearly 50 years, a landmark they’ll celebrate next year. As the lead provider for the DASSL service, Safenet delivers integrated, trauma-informed support across Lancashire, ensuring safety, dignity, and long-term recovery for women, men, children, and individuals with complex needs.
This Christmas, Safenet is calling on businesses and individuals to help make Christmas brighter for around 600 domestic abuse survivors (women, children, and men) supported by community teams or living in local refuges and safe accommodation.
